ACWA Power is looking to develop a Gas to Power (G2P) Project in South Africa linked to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (GASIPPPP).

The proposed development (Grootvlei G2P) Facility) is east of Secunda Town, within the Goven Mbeki Local Municipality, Gert Sibande District Municipality, Mpumalanga province.

The proposed development will entail the establishment of:

  • A 1350 MW G2P facility, including the establishment of an on-site substation and switching station;
  • Associated infrastructure including internal access roads and construction laydown areas;
  • Overhead transmission lines(OTL) to two alternative substations; and
  • Connection to the nearest natural gas pipeline (the Rompco Pipeline).

The Grootvlei G2P facility is proposed to connect to one of two substation alternatives, namely the existing Eskom SOL 400kV/132kV substation, or the Wonderkrag substation (which is presently being constructed) via overhead transmission lines. The site under consideration, Grootvlei, is a 40ha site which is currently designated as agricultural land. The OHTL footprint is about 4010 ha for all routes and alternatives. There is presently no formalised agricultural activity taking placing on the site, except for the grazing of livestock. Grootvlei is located on Portion 35 of the Farm Grootvlei 293 IS. The site is located to the east of Secunda, on privately owned land. The site is bounded on all sides by agricultural land. A Sasol coal conveyor belt runs along the northwestern periphery of the site.

SLR Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SLR), an independent firm of Environmental Assessment Practitioners, has been appointed by ACWA Power to manage the environmental authorisation processes.
